Kightly close to Wolves return

Friday 2nd October 2009, 11:00AM BST.

Michael KightlyWolves come up against a team who haven’t been paid this month when they take on bottom-of-the table Portsmouth at Molineux tomorrow.

Portsmouth executive directors are close to securing funding for wages owed to players – but it might not come before tomorrow’s game.

Wolves will be hoping to take advantage of the situation – but will be wary of claims the wage row has brought the Portsmouth players closer together.

Boss Mick McCarthy is pondering a recall for winger Michael Kightly for the important clash at the bottom of the Barclays Premier League.

Kightly broke a bone in his foot at the end of last season, and missed the opening of the Premier campaign due to his slow recovery.

But he has played as a substitute in the last two games – playing the second half of the 5-2 defeat to Sunderland last Sunday.

One player who won’t be in the squad is midfielder Dave Jones who will be out of action for two months after undergoing knee surgery.

The 24-year-old suffered the setback against his former club Manchester United in the Carling Cup at Old Trafford.

Jones tried to train ahead of last weekend’s clash with Sunderland but was not fit enough to play at the Stadium Of Light.

He underwent a scan and his worst fears have been realised, with the ex-England Under-21 player out of action until the start of December.

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy confirmed: “Jones has had a clean-up operation in his knee and will be out for two months.

“He felt it against Manchester United and thought it was just a bit of swelling. He tried to train in the build-up to the Sunderland game but it wasn’t right.

“He had a scan and has had the surgery on the knee.”

Jones joined Wolves last summer from Derby in a £1million deal and made 37 appearances in helping them gain promotion.
