Officers halt sex assault inquiry
Thursday 1st October 2009, 10:15AM BST.
An investigation into a suspected sex attack on a 15-year-old girl in Telford has been halted after she withdrew the allegation.
Detectives investigating reports that a sexual assault occurred in Randlay on Monday have confirmed that the girl has now admitted the report was false.
Detective Inspector Pete Brophy said: “I can confirm that the girl has now withdrawn her allegations and admitted that the sexual assault did not take place.
“We did have concerns that the report was not all that it seemed but it is imperative that we treat any allegations like this extremely seriously because genuine rape victims must have the confidence to report offences to the police.
“Although in this instance an enormous amount of time and effort has been wasted investigating the allegations, on this occasion – taking the vulnerability of the 15-year-old girl into account – we do not feel it is in anyone’s best interests to pursue offences such as wasting police time in relation to the allegations that were made.”
He thanked everyone who came forward with information that may have been useful to the investigation.
* Police are still hunting a man who raped a woman in her 20s on a footpath between Stafford Park and Randlay on August 11.
Anyone with information is asked to call Telford CID on 0300 3333000. A £10,000 reward is in place for information that leads to the conviction of the attacker.
