A controversial piece of public art has been unveiled in a Shropshire town with an organiser of Darwin celebrations praising it.

The Quantum Leap sculpture and Darwin Memorial Garden in Shrewsbury was seen for the first time yesterday after scaffolding was taken down.

But the sculpture, which has come under intense criticism, has been branded “surprisingly elegant” by John King, the Darwin co-ordinator for the town.

He said: “I am delighted with the Quantum Leap sculpture and despite it being made of stone and metal find it surprisingly elegant.”

Since when has John King been someone important whom it seems like his praise will be praised by the public????? i think not.
i know, lets get the council to post ballot papers to all homes in Shrewsbury asking if was worth the money and whether their mistake of agreeing it will cost them in the elections.
Now i wonder what the response will be?

It may come in useful for launching some of the lunatic boy racers who use Barkers Street and Smithfield Road as a race track most nights.

How long until someone comes out of one of the pubs and uses it as a diving board to launch themself into the Severn?
That said, I like it and think it was worth the money, now let’s spend a bit more planting up a lovely garden round it so we can sit and admire it.
I’d also like to see some mini-versions of it cast as souvenirs so that people who come to Shrewsbury can take away its image on things like keyrings and paperweights. Marvellous, you can imagine Darwin having one on his desk.

It’s a shame that the Shropshire Star couldn’t show us what the final design was going to be, well before now. Was there a reason for that?
I rather like this version – a shame its not painted white to depict a bleached skeleton though.
Still think its overpriced mine you.

A fantastic piece of artwork and I feel it is worth the money spent on it as it is an appropriate sculpture for Shrewsbury to celebrate the anniveraray of Charles Darwin’s birth.A bit like the backbone of a dinosaur- as comment 3 says, it would be good to have one as a paperweight!

Same old rubbish from the Star,(see vidio above) NO it is not a double helix or DNA and no it is not parts of a ship but the winding gear from the old ferry. And yet again it was not 18″ out but 5mm out. Do not let the truth get in the way of a good head line.

It’s brilliant! My friend is coming to visit on Sunday and it will be the first place I take her.

I’d buy a Quantum Leap keyring definitely.
