Post office branch closure is forced

Wednesday 30th September 2009, 10:56AM BST.

A Shrewsbury post office which was suddenly closed when its sub-postmistress was suspended following a routine audit has closed again -  just two weeks after it reopened.

Post Office bosses have today revealed that a temporary sub-postmaster who had been installed at Greenfields Post Office had handed in his notice and the post office closed yesterday.

Rubbina Shaheen, who runs the post office, remains precautionarily suspended pending further inquiries.

Following the closure, Post Office Ltd said it was working to get services reinstated as soon as possible.

A temporary sub-postmaster was put in place and the branch re-opened on September 14 not long after it was closed.

However, Post Office bosses have confirmed that the premises closed again yesterday because the temporary subpostmaster said he was unable to continue.

Bosses today urged people to come forward to help out on a temporary basis to ensure vital post office services can continue to be provided at the site in the short-term while the investigation continues.

Today Mike Dalton, a Post Office Ltd spokesman, confirmed that the branch was again closed.

He said: “The temporary subpostmaster has in turn handed in his notice.

“The branch closed from the end of trading yesterday. Post Office Ltd is committed to restoring the service and if anybody is interested in taking on the branch on a temporary basis we would urged them to call 0845 6016260.”

Although the post office was closed for a short time initially, the shop which it is within, was open for business as normal.

The first temporary closure came just over a year after Mrs Shaheen fought to keep the branch opened.

The Greenfields service was initially named on a hit-list of branches to close in Shropshire.

The proposal was part of a cost-saving programme to close 2,500 post offices nationally.

Residents and councillors celebrated when the branch was safeguarded following a wealth of support from the community and a campaign to prevent its closure.

Mrs Shaheen has previously said she does not not want to make any comment on the situation until further inquiries have been carried out.
