Store refit has brought jobs boost to town

Tuesday 29th September 2009, 11:29AM BST.

A Shrewsbury shop has undergone a six-figure refurbishment creating 20 jobs, bosses said today. And House of Fraser says more jobs will follow after the 12-week refit at Rackhams.

The High Street store has expanded the menswear section from 1,500 to 7,500 square feet and the two floors of homewear have been put together on one level. The young women’s fashion section has also been expanded and moved onto the ground floor.

New womenswear brands include Desigual, Yumi, Esprit and Frock and Frill.

Menswear will now feature outfits by Melka, Criminal, Tommy Hilfiger and Wrangler.

Tomorrow the store is set to hold a fashion show and launch night. The invitation-only event will include a champagne and canapes reception.

Becky Dewsbury, store manager, said she could not reveal how much the refurbishment had cost but she said it was a “substantial” amount.

She said: “Work has been carried out on every level. We’re going to reopen to store to card holders on Wednesday night and to the rest of the public on Thursday in the day.

“We’ve had Oasis and Therapy clothing in the young fashion section for a while now but we’re going to have so much more as it will be spread over most of the ground floor.

“It’s going to be fab, we’re still putting it together at the moment but the range will be absolutely fantastic.”

She praised employees for their efforts: “The staff have been amazing, they’ve traded through the work and disruption.”
