Parking free after machine failure

Tuesday 29th September 2009, 11:29AM BST.

Shoppers in a Shropshire town have enjoyed free parking after ticket machines at a supermarket car park broke down.

People parking at Tesco in Ludlow normally have to pay 50p for up to two hours’ parking, which can be refunded if they spend more than £5 in store.

But reports suggested motorists were taking full advantage of the machine malfunction and that the car park was heaving yesterday lunchtime.

The machines were still out of action early today as the store waited for a delivery of parts which would allow the machine to be fixed.

A spokesman said customers had been putting money in but the machines had not been producing tickets and a sign had been put up indicating free parking.

Shopper Celia Anthony said: “I love it, I do. I don’t think you should have to pay to park when you come to shop and I think a lot of people would say the same.”
