Can Town keep up with the pace?

Joss Labadie of Shrewsbury Town scores a goal to make it 2-0Town continued their fine recent form and march up towards the top of the league with a 3-0 victory against strugglers Northampton, writes Shrewsbury Town blogger James Pugh.

It doesn’t seem that long ago when I was writing as a worried Town fan about our prospects for the coming season after a sluggish start to the new campaign. However, after nine games Town sit in a very respectable sixth place and hot on the heels of the divisions pace setters.

It’s easy to get carried away with three wins and three clean sheets on the trot, but the way we are playing and grinding out results at the moment is enough to get any fan excited and mentions of the ‘P’ word get are being used more frequently.

One thing about Saturday’s result against a team low in confidence is that it was a little flattering and we were certainly far from our best. But what is it they say about the best teams win even when they don’t play well.

Northampton had lots of the ball and created some good chances, but some terrific performances from the likes of Langmead and Phillips enabled us to keep them out at the back and when our chances came we took them.

Despite little action in the loan transfer market, it has at least enabled youngsters like Simpson and Hooman to get a taste of first team football, which can only help develop them as players.

On a sour note it was disappointing to hear that Disley will be out of action through injury for a while, although we don’t seem to be missing him at the moment.

What do fans think of the reasons why we have hit form lately? Could it be because we have played some poor teams or it is because Simpson has found his best formation and team?

One of the key factors behind our success has been the form of Phillips in goal who at present looks unbeatable. I remember whenever he played against us for Bristol Rovers he always seemed to be a reliable keeper and he has brought that form with him to Town. I am not sure of the reason why Rovers don’t want him at present, but if there is any way we can sign him permanently Simpson should do it.

The big problem is that if we signed him, we would have four keepers on the books and for a League Two side that is too many. An option would be to pay Garner to leave, although he is injured at the moment and I doubt too many teams will come in for him.

You wouldn’t think Town would have financial worries about paying Garner off, but with the amount of money we have spent in the summer, especially from the sale of Holt, it begs the question – are we in financial trouble?

What do fans think?

Pay Garner off now and get Phillips in!!
it’s surely a no-brainer for the fans, just down to the logistics for the club! i honestly cant believe that there are many fans that would welcome a return to the first team for Garner, surely none that went to Chesterfield away last season. Phillips seems to have galvanised the back line with his assured confidence which in turn has only helped Langers n Coughlan. I personally would be delighted if a permanent deal can be completed in January for him!!

I agree with Sven, as much as I like Glyn Garner I don’t believe he has any sort of future at Town. I doubt if he will ever play for us again, so it would be best to cut our losses and try and do a deal with him. But lets not forget we do have another keeper the injured Chris Neal, presumably he wasn’t brought here to warm the bench and he must surely command to high a wage not to play regularly. I think Chris needs a few more games yet to settle in and show us what a good keeper he really is. But I do agree that the more we see of Mr Phillips the more we all think he is a bit special and just maybe he is worth a punt.
