Services of post office to resume
Monday 28th September 2009, 10:55AM BST.
A Shropshire village’s post office service is set to re-open after months of campaigning by residents.
The service will resume at Cleobury North Village Stores on Thursday and will be available on that day each week from 2.15pm to 5.15pm.
It comes two years after a permanent post office was closed following fraud allegations against the former sub-postmistress.
The Hosted Outreach service, a visiting counter service, will offer the usual range of facilities including the collection of benefits and banking.
“The situation will be closely watched and if the number of customers shows a significant increase, it is possible the opening time will be extended,” said Eileen Reynolds, clerk to Aston Botterell, Burwarton and Cle- obury North Parish Council.
Parish councillors have been battling to restore the postal service since the area’s post office closed almost two years ago.
Former sub-postmistress Tina Doughty was jailed for 18 months after being found guilty of defrauding the post office of £80,000.
MP Philip Dunne and Shropshire councillor Robert Tindall have backed the villagers’ campaign to restore a postal service to the area.
The Cleobury North Village Stores was taken over by Rebecca Owen and her father Melvin Bacon this year.
