Wounded soldier to tackle mountain climb
Saturday 26th September 2009, 11:00AM BST.
A Shropshire soldier who is set to tackle one of the world’s tallest mountains despite having lost part of his leg is celebrating after raising almost £15,000.
Stuart Trow, from north Shropshire, lost part of his leg after being shot three times while serving in Afghanistan, but he is preparing to tackle Mount Kilimanjaro next month.
The former SAS and Parachute Regiment member is doing it to raise funds for Help for Heroes, which supports wounded British soldiers. He has so far raised £14,800.
Mr Trow was injured four weeks after being deployed to Afghanistan in the wake of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York on September 11, 2001.
The 32-year-old father-of-two, who also served in Kosovo, Bosnia and Northern Ireland, said he would struggle physically to complete the challenge.
But he said he was determined to get to the top to raise as much money as he could for Help for Heroes and that the climb was his way of giving something back.
He said a thank you to all of the people who had donated money and supported him. “Thanks very much to everybody really. The whole experience which started back in February has been really quite humbling and everyone’s support has been fantastic,” he added.
A dinner and dance has been organised to boost funds further.
The black tie event will be held at Rowton Castle Country Club on November 7 at 6.30pm. Tickets cost £25 and are available from 07725556276 or 07853183022.
