Man dies after bike veers off road

Saturday 26th September 2009, 11:29AM BST.

A motorcyclist died after crawling his way to a roadside near Market Drayton after his bike veered off the road into a field, police said today.

The man, in his 40s, was found at about 11am yesterday on the A53 just outside Loggerheads by a passing motorist who stopped to help.

Staffordshire Police spokeswoman Liz McGinn said it is believed the man, from Stoke-on-Trent, may have crawled his way to the roadside after his motorbike veered off the road and into a field on Thursday night.

He is believed to have been travelling down the A53 heading towards the Stoke-on-Trent area after leaving the Stormy Petrel pub at Tern Hill about 9pm.

Officers are keen to trace anyone who may have seen him and in particular the driver of a black Audi that may have travelled on the A53 at the same time.

Claire Thomas, spokeswoman for the West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: “Crews arrived to find a man at the side of the road who had suffered serious multiple injuries.

“Unfortunately nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead at the scene.”

Ian Freeman, licensee at the Stormy Petrel, said: “The thoughts of all his friends at the Stormy are with him and his family and friends.”

Anyone with any information is urged to contact the police on 0300 123 4455.
