Quantum Leap is set for exposure

quantum-leap-sculpture-topA controversial art sculpture celebrating Charles Darwin is expected to finally be unveiled next week – when a supporting framework surrounding it is finally taken down.

The cost of the Quantum Leap and Darwin Memorial Garden in Mardol Quay has spiralled to £450,000 and sparked angry comments and a protest this week.

Now council bosses are hoping to have a frame surrounding the sculpture dismantled by the end of Tuesday.

George Candler, assistant director culture and leisure at Shropshire Council, today said: “The scaffolding surrounding Quantum Leap has now been removed.

“The frame which is supporting the Quantum Leap is anticipated to come down by the end of Tuesday as the arch is now self supporting and the grout inside the structure has hardened to a sufficient strength.”

Not only have the costs spiralled but the ribs look they have too! Thanks for pointing out the difference between the actual and mock up Paul.

The mark of a great piece of public art is that is attracts attention, good or bad and in that respect Quantum Leap has suceeded already. You don’t have to love it, that’s the point. Many of the now classic pieces of arts in the past have had their critics but that hasn’t stopped them going on to be recognised as iconic.

I was going to wait to see this sculpture before deciding on or expressing any opinion.

The artist mock up looks good.

But i have just seen the web cam pictures. It looks nothing like the artist mock up. It looks frankly hideous. I have always believed in investment in public art. However the councillors behind this scheme have got it completely wrong.

I urge people not to stand too near it when they take the supporting frame away just in case the grout hasn’t set hard enough to hold it up or they could be the first casualities this sculpture is bound to cause when it is used as a climbing frame!

What happened to working to plan? Why show us a picture for months, of something that looks remotely “ok” (i suppose), then build a frankenstein’s monster?

If it doesn’t fall down in 6 months, it wants knocking down.
