Funding boost for indoor market

Broad_StreetWork to transform Welshpool’s indoor market into an old fashioned shopping street is set to get under way next week thanks to funding of £85,000.

The exciting plans, which will bring new traders to the town, are part of the Welshpool town centre regeneration scheme.

Nearly 20 mini-shops, complete with slate roofs, will be built on the ground floor of the town hall. They will be open on market and non-market days.

Town clerk Robert Robinson revealed today the 19 outlets had already been snapped up.

And this week’s town council heard the Burgess Lands Trust, a local charitable trust, had agreed to provide the £85,000 needed to fund the initiative.

Mr Robinson said planning permission had already been obtained for the scheme and work would start on October 3.

The scheme will complement the £1 million revamp of the town hall.
