Driver killed in 100ft plunge is named

Friday 25th September 2009, 11:26AM BST.

accident_signA woman who died after her car plunged more than 100ft down an embankment on a Shropshire hillside was today named by police as Clare Elizabeth Lett, from Herefordshire.

The 62-year-old was from Much Cowarne, near Bromyard, Herefordshire, they said.

Officers were called to the crash in which a beige Saab 9-3 car left the Burway road on the Long Mynd near Church Stretton on Wednesday morning.

It is believed the car rolled at least 100ft down a steep embankment into the valley before coming to rest in a stream.

Ms Lett was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Police are today continuing to appeal for witnesses to the accident and anyone with any information should contact them on 0300 333 3000.

Inspector Ken Mackail, from West Mercia Police, said although they do not believe that there were any other vehicles involved in the accident at this stage, they were keeping an open mind.

Carding Mill Valley and the road over the Long Mynd were both shut for several hours on Wednesday after the accident, which happened at about 10.20am.

An ambulance, an incident support officer and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford with a Basics emergency doctor on board were sent to the scene.

Town councillors have expressed their shock at the accident, as have workers at the National Trust, which owns the land, following the tragedy.

An inquest is due to open early next week.
