Big day for cricket teams
Friday 25th September 2009, 2:39PM BST.
It’s the ultimate final day decider in tomorrow’s clash between Bomere Heath and Welshpool – with a place in the Marston’s Shropshire Premier League at stake.
Bomere hold a 12-point advantage over their Mid Wales visitors going into what is, without doubt, the biggest game of the season for both sides.
That means a winning draw would be enough for the villagers, even though Welshpool know they absolutely have to win.
But Bomere skipper Ian Day, who will be standing down from his position immediately after the game, insists his team will go into the nerve-jangling battle with a positive mindset.
“From ball one we’ve got to try and win the game, it’s as simple as that,” he said.
“If you start to think about the draw then ultimately you will lose.
“We’re fortunate that we’re 12 points ahead of them at the moment but it’s literally a cup final for both of us now.”
Day also hopes home support could be a factor on the day and is urging the people of Bomere Heath to come down to the ground to get behind them.
Whispers coming out of Welshpool suggest they have a number of injuries and unavailabilities which could pose problems for skipper Dale Evans for the big game.
Strike
But there are no such problems for Day, who is able to welcome back a trio of key players.
Strike bowler Chris Stevens has been playing football as a forward for Wem Town but is taking a break from scoring goals to go back to taking wickets.
Experienced batsman Neil Proctor is fit again after a minor operation, while fellow batter Chris Edenborough returns after a fishing trip.
The big prize in the division is already settled, with Oswestry having been crowned champions.
They finish their campaign at Madeley.
Quatt hold a 16-point advantage as they bid to hold on to second place and they complete their programme at home to last season’s champions Reman Services.
Much Wenlock are the only side who can deny Quatt, and they would need to beat a much-improved Newtown side to stand any chance.
Albrighton and Wem meet in a clash between two sides already guaranteed top half finishes, while Allscott – also certain of a top seven spot – look to end their first season at this level on a high note away at Shelton.
Broseley and Ludlow have both had disappointing seasons and occupy positions in the bottom four going into their final game.
