TV host Johnny Ball captivated his audience during two shows in Shropshire with a wealth of scientific facts and information – including explaining how 50 per cent of human genes are the same those found in a banana.

Organisers today said Mr Ball’s two shows at Theatre Severn in Shrewsbury yesterday were well attended and provided a light-hearted look at evolution and Darwinism with a serious message.

Mr Ball performed a free schools matinee show for students aged 14 to 19, before taking to the stage for an evening performance last night which included a question and answer session.

Theatre marketing manager Jan Edmondson said: “It was really discussing evolution and Darwinism and all the aspects he had come across in his research.

“It was really a light-hearted look but there was a serious undertone, especially in the matinee for the schools because it was interesting how he brought out the arguments on both sides for evolution and religion.

“One of the things that came out was that 50 per cent of our genes are the same as a banana. It was bits and pieces you probably wouldn’t know that brought it to life for people.”
