Young Hayley Purvis has created a monster but it could be sitting pretty among Shropshire gardeners. Hayley has grown what she thinks is quite possibly the tallest sunflower in the county.

Hayley, 11, from Monkmoor, Shrewsbury, grew the giant in the garden of her godmother’s home in the town’s Springfield and has watched it climb to almost 17ft tall over the summer.

She is currently top of the crop of Shropshire Star readers when it comes to growing the tallest sunflower, having now overtaken Telford girls Holly and Abbie Lakin, of Churncote, Stirchley, who we reported had grown one specimen which measured a lofty 16ft.

Green-fingered Eric and Dorothy Ingram, of Whitefriars, Ludlow, have nothing to be ashamed of either with the 12ft 3in sunflower they have grown from seed.

Mrs Ingram said: “It is even up above the roof now. Our daughter planted it. She had six in little pots and that was the only one that came up.”

Ava Pearce-Cruise, five, has also had a blooming success with her sunflower which has grown to 9ft 11ins.

Ava, a pupil at St Luke’s Primary School, in Trench, Telford, began growing the flowers at the family home in Donnington after an exercise at school but she never expected the plant to reach such heights.

It’s really nice to see kids taking an interest in something other than computer games and tv. Well done to all with their sunflowers!
