Campaigners told of danger road injuries
Wednesday 23rd September 2009, 9:05AM BST.
More than 30 people have been injured on a Shropshire road since March with one collision resulting in a death, statistics have revealed.
The figures for the A49 were issued at a safety campaign group meeting by Sergeant Paul Winfer of West Mercia Police.
The statistics show that between March 1 and September 4 there have been 16 collisions resulting in 32 casualties. Of these there has been one death.
Seven people were seriously injured and 24 suffered slight injuries.
Last year it was reported the stretch of road, from Ross-on-Wye to Bayston Hill, near Shrewsbury, was the third most dangerous in the region with more than 600 accidents in which people were injured and killed in the last five years.
Safety group secretary Councillor Ted Clarke said the meeting also heard from Saqib Mir, of the Highways Agency, who outlined the major renewal work completed at Bayston Hill and Dorrington this summer.
The meeting, which was held this month, heard the resurfacing work at Onibury would be completed by October and major schemes would take place next year at Leebotwood, Felhampton and Wooferton.
Councillor Clarke said today the number of collisions had decreased in the last few years, which he put down to minor improvements.
He said: “There have been improvements in signage and speed control along the route. The meeting was generally quite positive.”
He said plans had been outlined to install flashing speed indicators or fixed speed cameras in Dorrington and Church Stretton. He said the flashing indicators at Bayston Hill had now been set to just over 30mph instead of 40mph to reflect the speed limit.
Police said they did not wish to comment on the figures.
The next meeting of the A49 Safety Campaign Group is scheduled for March 6 at 10.30am at the Silvester Horne Institute in Church Stretton.
