Sarah has golden glow after three wins
Tuesday 22nd September 2009, 1:12PM BST.
Shropshire’s Sarah Adlington struck judo gold in an impressive showing by the British squad at the GB World Cup in Birmingham, writes CHRIS HUDSON.
Adlington, who is now based in Edinburgh, came out on top in the over-78kgs section, beating Italy’s Lucia Tangorre in the final.
Hers was one of four golds going to GB judokas, who also claimed one silver and four bronze medals as well.
The 23-year-old had been hoping for a meeting with British No 1 and four-time European champion Karina Bryant, but the world championship silver medalist pulled out with a wrist injury.
Still, Adlington came through three contests to take the title, starting off by eliminating France’s Emilie Waldet in the pool stage.
She followed that up by beating Beatrice Rietz of Germany in the semi-final before facing Tangorre.
In that final, she scored two yukos through the match but it was the hold that the Brit secured that won her the gold medal.
Adlington said: “I am pretty happy with that. I am pleased with the performance throughout the day.
“There weren’t so many heavyweights here this year but it was good to fight some different athletes.
“My goal is to keep improving as we head towards the London Olympics.”
Adlington does not get much rest before she is back in action, as she has now been selected in the GB squad which will travel to Minsk for the Belarus World Cup on October 10-11.
