Railway blocked by 4×4 collision

Tuesday 22nd September 2009, 9:35AM BST.

accident_signA 4×4 vehicle pulling a trailer came off the road and crashed on to a railtrack used by a Mid Wales tourist railway.

The crash blocked the track and forced bosses at the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway to cancel some services while the debris was cleared.

No-one was injured in the incident but railway volunteers said if a train had been passing at the time of the crash on Saturday the collision could have been fatal.

They have called for safety barriers to be installed between the railway and the A458 trunk road which runs alongside part of the track.

The railway’s deputy general manager Kevin Heywood said the crash happened at Sylfaen Summit about two miles from Welshpool.

He said: “A 4×4 vehicle pulling a trailer which had a mini digger on it came off the road and ended up on our track. The vehicle was on the track, blocking it, while the trailer and mini digger ended up beside the road.”

He added: “The crash on Saturday meant our morning service from Llanfair was not able to reach Welshpool and we had to cancel what would have been the return service from Welshpool to Llanfair.”

A Dyfed-Powys Police spokeswoman said officers attended Sylfaen Summit at 9.40am on Saturday when a Toyota Landcruiser left the road and landed on the track. She confirmed nobody was injured.
