MPs in war of words on campaign

Saturday 19th September 2009, 10:14AM BST.

ADavid Wright MP war of words has broken out between two county MPs over a campaign launched to fight any downgrading of the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford and transfer of services to Shrewsbury.

Telford Labour MP David Wright said he was launching a Say No to Shrewsbury campaign but that has incensed Daniel Kawczynski, Tory MP for Shrewsbury.

Mr Kawczynski said: “I am demanding a public apology from David Wright over his Say No to Shrewsbury campaign. Many of his constituents work in and use the hospital.

“To have a campaign slogan like that is infantile, demeaning, derogatory and highly insulting to the people who work and use the hospital, including Mr Wright’s own constituents.

“He is personalising this as a Telford versus Shrewsbury thing.

“I say, Say No to David Wright.”

Mr Wright said he made no apology for standing up for the people of Telford. He added: “That is what they would expect me to do.

“The campaign is clearly about services, not about personalities and I am sad Daniel Kawczynski has decided to make it a personality issue.

“I am urging everyone who lives in Telford to get involved in protecting the PRH. This is about retaining and expanding services in Telford.”
