Smith: ‘It’s too early to panic’

Friday 18th September 2009, 12:36PM BST.

rob-smith-22AFC Telford United manager Rob Smith today insisted there was no panic at his side’s current blip – and backed it to end at Eastwood tomorrow.

Despite lying ninth and only six points off top spot, the Bucks make the trip to Nottinghamshire in desperate need of a confidence-boosting victory after damaging defeats to Northwich Victoria and Alfreton.

And Smith is confident his entire playing squad are up for the challenge.

“In our four years here we haven’t had many bad times but we are not panicking by any means – we are only 10 games in,” he said.

“Confidence is low but we need everyone to step up to the plate and show a strength of character.

“We are as strong as anything as a unit and we will go to Eastwood, be positive and I think we can win there.

“We couldn’t ask for a tougher run in the league with Eastwood, Droylsden and Southport and I think the next month is really important.

“But I’m convinced we have got a decent run coming around the corner.”

Telford’s hopes tomorrow are boosted by the return of striker Andy Brown after a rib injury and midfielder Carl Rodgers following a three-game suspension.

But assistant manager Larry Chambers admitted a tough away day awaits.

“Rob and I remember Eastwood from our Willenhall days and we have come up against them in the early days of Telford,” he added.

“It’s a difficult place to go and they have had a great start to the season after being promoted.

“It’s a similar set-up to Alfreton and we will have to be at our best and strong to come away with any sort of result.

“The players are having a bad time – we have got players out of form but they are working hard and sooner or later it will turn and we hope tomorrow will be the occasion.”
