fire_engineOswestry’s firefighters will not be taking part in the national fire service charity car wash day tomorrow because of fears that the soapy water could run into local streams and pollute them.

Thousands of firefighters from across Britain will be washing cars at their local fire station to raise funds for the Firefighters’ Charity.

Llanfair Caereinion firefighters will be lining up with buckets and sponges between 9.30am and 12.30pm asking motorists to make a donation in return for a shampoo and polish for their vehicles.

But Oswestry is unable to take part. Firefighter Alan Walker said because the station was built over a water course the Environment Agency had stopped them washing vehicles there.

He said: “We hope to hold a different event to raise money for the Firefighters’ Charity, which helps injured fire fighters, later in the year.”

Welshpool fire station held its car wash last weekend. Firefighter Russell Pugh said the event raised £377 and thanked the public for supporting the event.
