Strange smell in Shrewsbury
Thursday 17th September 2009, 10:34AM BST.
A farmer spreading chicken muck has been blamed for an unpleasant smell over areas of Shrewsbury.
Residents and workers in Shrewsbury have been left confused by a strange and unpleasant “sewage smell” in the Harlescott, Monkmoor and Abbey Foregate areas of town.
Officials have been looking into the source of the whiff.
It is thought they believe it is from a farmer spreading chicken muck on his fields and not digging it in quick enough.
The smell started last week and was in evidence again over the weekend and last night.
Beverley Marsh, a Harlescott resident, said: “You could smell it across Harlescott, Monkmoor and Abbey Foregate – it was a real ‘country smell’.”
She added: “I rang Severn Trent to see if it was a sewage problem and the local abattoir and council and eventually the council got back to me to say it was a farmer spreading chicken muck on his fields and not digging it in quick enough so the smell was spreading.
“They got in touch with him and the smell went away.”
However, student Richard Marsh said the smell was still lingering around the town. “It smells like a sewer by the river,” he said.
Brian Johnson, of the council, said: “We encourage people to contact us on 0345 6789000 if they have any concerns including pollution.”

yep shrewsbury is surrounded by farms and townies moan about all things possible. I remember working on rea brook estate (never again) laying a drive , it was our last day and the owner wanted it finished before he went away it was 8pm and we started a mixer for 5 mins max. Out all the people came abuse, swearing, threat of violence, and yet as the owner said all through the summer he had to put up with music and loud burger and sausage burning sessions until 2am .Weird lot townies.
As for the farmer not being quick enough to dig it in?? i think they ment plough they can take as long as they like it is up to him how quick he does it un written rule he has to di it in 24 hours or so i am afraid .
