Extra £100,000 needed for artwork
Wednesday 16th September 2009, 2:00PM BST.
An extra £100,000 could be spent on a major project to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Shrewsbury’s most famous son Charles Darwin, it emerged today.
Councillors are being asked to approve the increase to the budget for the Quantum Leap sculpture project.
Work to correct the 12-metre high £350,000 Quantum Leap in Mardol Quay Gardens, which has been beset by technical problems, started last month as it was reportedly as much as 18 inches out of alignment at the top of the structure.
It is due to be officially opened next month.
A report to the council’s cabinet, which is due to meet next Wednesday, requests that councillors approve an increase in the budget. It says: “Approval is requested as part of this report for an additional £100,000 to be allocated to this project to meet the additional costs incurred in delivering this project.
“This will be financed from reserve balances inherited from Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council.”
George Candler, assistant director for culture and leisure services at Shropshire Council, today said: “Discussions on the project costs are still ongoing.”

Going well isn’t it!
How much would it cost to just pull it down and accept it was never really wanted by anyone.
In the current financial climate – how will the councillors find it within themselves to approve another penny to this pile of junk?
why should they pay more? if someones cocked up it should be down to the contractor not the council
Report abuse
another huge waste of money by our council…. cant anything be done right in this town!!
Ooh!..I can feel a little Millenium Dome situation coming on…

Cut it up in to 1 inch chunks and sell in on eBay to Darwinists. It would make a fortune.
Simples!

What is going on with this council. How much more waste must we endure. Not Another penny should be spent on this wsteful project. Lets face it the guy was only born here and did not stay that long.

They are joking aren’t they ?
At a time when the Local Bus service is being slowly but surely eradicated and old folks are being ‘Marooned’ in their houses because of no buses
They want more funding for something that is turning the Town into a Laughing stock
Somebody should do the honourable thing and Resign over this Fiasco
Report abuse
I understood that this was funded from elsewhere not our council, obviously I was misled/mistaken.
Charles Armstrong said in a previous post that the councillors were told by ‘others’ it could not be done.Perhaps they should have listened.
I love great sculpture and great architecture and we have great artists and architects who live in Shrewsbury town itself so how come they struggle to be acknowledged in any sort of positive way yet our elected representatives make decisions for us that are quite frankly rubbish?
can i suggest that the extra money needed be donated by the council members that agreed the go ahead for this concrete spring! maybe reduce there expenses and look at removing some of the non jobs within the council should easily provide the little extra 100k needed ,
Report abuse
Surely this has to be a joke. What are these Councillors playing at. Perhaps they could make a personal contribution towards the cost by not claiming so much in expenses this year. (I somehow doubt it !!!!)
Let’s leave it as the leaning tower of Frankwell A tribute to the misguided largesse of the last administration.

100k is more money tha I earn in a decade!

If I were Griffiths (the folk supposed to be putting this thing up) I don’t think I would be plastering my name all over the side of it!

“This will be financed from reserve balances” – More accountancy weasel-speak and slither from the bean counters across the river. Please remember that whatever words are chosen this will be financed from OUR money and not theirs.
pay for it with JOB CUTS i say, sack the lot of them
Report abuse
this is disgraceful, a 25% cost overun, in the private sector some one would be sacked for that
they should find the savings from this years arts budgets with less floury fluffy feel good arty farty stuff and concentrate on basic service delivery like picking up bins and filling in pot holes in the roads
