More than 700 people visited the Shropshire Autumn Flower Show, with organisers hailing it their “best year in a long time”.

Wrekin and District Horticultural Society pulled out all the stops last weekend to stage their 30th flower show at Roden Nursery, near Telford.

More than 700 visitors and 100 exhibitors enjoyed glorious weather as part of the annual event.

Show secretary, Jean Turcell, said: “It went very well, it was the best year in a long time. Interest on the gate was up and the standard of the exhibitors was very high.

“We had a lot more people come in to pay this year and we think interest is really growing for the show.”

Exhibitors were displaying their finest flowers, vegetables and fruit. On the craft side there were handicrafts, floral art, photography and trade stands.

This was the organiser’s 30th show and third venue after three decades. Their very first venue was a marquee at a Super Saturday Weekend which was held every year by the then Wrekin Council.

After much success the committee decided they needed a bigger venue and jumped ship to Harper Adams University College in Edgmond, near Newport. But numbers began to fall as people found it difficult to get to the campus.

It was then the committee found their new and final home in Roden Nursery.

The show secretary said: “We are definitely holding it again next year. There was one lady who came up to me and said she wanted me to send her an entry form straight away for next year.

“It was her first time at the show.”
