Prison officer wins tribunal claim
Tuesday 15th September 2009, 11:49AM BST.
A former officer at a Shrewsbury prison who claimed she was bullied out of a job near Wolverhampton for being too sexy has won her claim for unfair dismissal.
Amitjo Kajla, 22, also won claims for age and sex discrimination against Her Majesty’s Prison Service.
Miss Kajla took her case to an employment tribunal in Birmingham in July after resigning from Brinsford prison, near Wolverhampton, last year.
The tribunal was told that at one stage Miss Kajla was the girlfriend of an inmate serving five years for armed robbery at Stoke Heath Young Offenders Institute near Market Drayton. When she wanted to visit him she was advised to inform prison chiefs at The Dana Prison, Shrewsbury, where she was then based.
She chose to leave him after the governor gave her the choice of staying in operational support and continuing her relationship or ending it and going for promotion to become a prison officer.
At Brinsford from July 2007 to May 2008, Miss Kajla claimed she suffered harassment and discrimination from a male prison officer due to the fact she was a young and attractive female, in a predominantly male environment.
She resigned following her treatment and the tribunal has issued a written judgment accepting that this amounted to unfair dismissal.
In a statement, Miss Kajla, of Wolverhampton, said: “I am very pleased with the tribunal’s findings.”
A Prison Service spokesman said: “We are disappointed by the tribunal’s findings.”
