Shrewsbury 2 Crewe 0 — the blogger’s view

Monday 14th September 2009, 8:09AM BST.

Shrewsbury_v_CreweTown returned to winning ways on Saturday with an impressive 2-0 victory over high-flying local rivals Crewe, writes Shrewsbury Town blogger James Pugh.

In a closely fought game which could have gone either way, goals from an on-form Hibbert and on-loan Labadie helped Town move back into the top half of the table.

Although Crewe created some good chances and knocked the ball around well, Town took their chances and finally got their first clean sheet of the season thanks to an inspired performance from keeper Phillips.

One team selection that has caused much controversy recently has been that of young Jake Simpson (the manager’s son), who has started the last two games. Some fans have got on the manger’s back about it, saying he is only picking him because he is his son. I just want to say to these fans — back off Simpson and give the man some credit.

He is professional enough to pick players who he thinks will win us matches and not because he feels like he owes them any favours.

The young lad has done all right in the past two games and with the injuries we have at the moment. I say give the youngsters a chance. If it was any other young player I bet Simpson would be praised for giving him an opportunity to shine.

I am also keen to hear from fans what they think of striker Nathan Elder. Initially I was very excited about his signing, especially after starring for Brentford last season, but although it’s early days I have been disappointed with him so far. I fear he will end up going down in history with the reputation of the likes of Devon White, John Gayle and Leo Fortune West. Hopefully he will prove me wrong.

Although our start to the season has been a frustrating one, we have had terrible luck with injuries and I am confident once Simpson has a fully-fit squad to choose from we will be able to start showing more consistency and prove that we are one of the division’s strongest sides.

Despite our mixed start to the season Town find themselves only one point from the playoff positions. Now is the time to make sure we stay in the top half of the league and stay in touch with the division’s pace-setters.

The loan transfer window has opened once again and although the manager has been frustrated in his attempts to bring in new players so far, hopefully he will be able to add some much-needed depth to his depleted squad.

That’s a bit harsh on White and West, putting them in the same bracket as the truly horrific Gayle! Devon White actually had a decent strike-rate, whilst Fortune-West was fairly prolific in his time with Town.

Don’t think much of Elder mind, although it’s very early days. I hope he improves and helps fire the Town up the league!

What an incredibly racist comment…surely you have only picked these guys because the colour of their skin. There can be no other reason as Fortune-West and White were well thought of. I cannot believe the Shropshire Star has published this.

I certainly hope that Elder is eventualy compared to Fortune-West who I thought did an excellent job when he was here – exactly what he was brought in to do. I can’t believe that you have such a low opinion of Leo without him we would have struggled to make the play-offs that season (06-07)
