Leamington 0 Market Drayton 2
Monday 14th September 2009, 2:20PM BST.
Drayton boss Simon Line revealed how his men banked on beating Leamington’s “sound barrier” with a flying start to achieve an impressive FA Cup victory at the New Windmill Ground.
“We knew we had to silence their fans to have any chance of keeping their players quiet,” he said, reflecting on another against-the-odds Drayton success story.
Line believed the major threat to Town’s hopes would be the early challenge of playing before a large and loud partisan home crowd.
He explained: “Leamington have a big group of the most vocal fans you could wish to meet in non-League football and we feared they might get at some of our young lads who are not used to playing before large crowds.
“We believed we were Leamington’s match as a team, but felt an early goal was vital to prevent the sound of their chanting fans unsettling our side so we planned on all out attack from the start .
“It worked fantastically well. We were a goal up in three minutes and had two by the quarter-hour mark.
“The home supporters simply couldn’t get at us after that – we got a fair deal from them in the end – and neither could their players. We grew in confidence and long before the end it was their lads who were taking stick, not ours.”
Nicky Porter had shown not a hint of hesitation as he firmly hit home Town’s opener, credit for which should be shared with striker Tom Rogers, who put in some great work on the left.
Porter turned provider for the second as Town again ripped Leamington’s defence apart with an inventive strike.
It started when Jason Francis broke up a Leamington attack. Porter took the ball on the burst, drew in the home defence with a powerful run through the middle and with Town players streaming forward in support, picked out Martyn Davies who stroked past exposed home keeper, Chris Kiely.
Job done as far as taming the formidable array of over 500 home fans was concerned.
Town then got down to keeping a grip on the tie that was only really threatened on the half hour mark by Mark Bellingham’s disputed penalty.
But skipper-keeper Andy Pryce superbly pushed his shot past the post and Town quickly countered with another well-constructed attack that ended with a shot from Rogers hitting the post, the ball rebounding across goal to where an acrobatic Jay Lawrence shaved the woodwork too.
Leamington huffed and puffed aplenty and could claim they applied most of the territorial pressure which, on a luckier day, could have pulled one or two back.
But Town’s again-excellent defence had their measure and Drayton too might have had a couple more, with Rogers missing an excellent chance.
