Inquiries after cable tragedy

Monday 14th September 2009, 1:15PM BST.

Investigations were continuing today into the death of a man who was electrocuted at a showground on the Powys border.

The man has been named by the organisers of Kington Show as Mervyn Allen.

He was pronounced dead at Kington, off the A44, shortly before 8pm on Friday.

It is believed that Mr Allen, who is thought to be from Gloucestershire, had been delivering goods to Kington Show which took place on Saturday, when a JCB he was carrying on a truck hit overhead live power cables.

In a statement on their website, the show committee said: “The show committee would like to pass on their condolences to the family of Mr Allen following the tragic accident on Friday night.

“The show committee has been, and will continue to assist the police and all other investigating authorities into the circumstances of the incident.”

Emergency services attempted to resuscitate Mr Allen but despite their efforts nothing could be done to save him.

Dozens of homes in Kington, Knighton and Presteigne were believed to have been left without power for just over an hour.

Ros Bradbury, from Kington, said: “We did hear the emergency services going up the road at around 8pm and our electricity got cut off soon after and didn’t go back for more than an hour.”

A spokesman for the Health and Safety Executive said because the accident happened ahead of an outdoor event investigations would be carried out by the local authority.
