It was billed in the official programme as “the hottest event of the year” — and although the cricket might not have been up to Ashes standards, a host of celebrities still served up a fun-fest of an afternoon in Shropshire yesterday.

Famous faces from the world of entertainment, including Chris Tarrant, Nick Hancock, and former Emmerdale star Frazer Hines joined sporting legends of yesteryear such as Devon Malcolm and JPR Williams at Wrekin College in Wellington, Telford.

They were there to take part in the annual charity cricket fundraiser for the Fairbridge, which supports underprivileged and deprived youngsters around the West Midlands.

The event, which pitched Chris Tarrant’s celebrity XI against the Old Wrekinians, raised more than £6,000 for the cause, helped by a gala lunch for 200 people in a giant marquee, and an auction which included several rare autographed items of sporting memorabilia.

Among the non-playing stars lending support to the cause at yesterday’s event were Holby City star Robert Powell, BBC and Sky Sports presenters Nick Owen and Gary Newbon, plus event organiser Fred Rumsey, a former England cricketer, and cartoonist Bill Tidy.

Several hundred people flocked to the afternoon event, which also included family fun activities such as a climbing wall, and face painting for youngsters.
