Vandals set bins ablaze

Friday 11th September 2009, 1:19PM BST.

Vandals put lives at risk when they set fire to wheelie bins at a block of flats in Shrewsbury, police said today.

The fire was started between 9.30pm and 11.30pm at flats in New Park Road in Castlefields and involved two wheelie bins and a recycling bin.

Windows in one flat were cracked by the heat which also caused fascia boards and panelling around a front door to melt .

Richard Ewels, a spokesman for West Mercia Police, today said: “This was an extremely irresponsible and dangerous act which could have resulted in residents being trapped and seriously hurt.

“We are anxious to find those responsible and would welcome any information which might help.”

Anybody with any information about the fire is asked to call police on 0300 3333000.
