Update on town’s cycling status
Friday 11th September 2009, 9:00AM BST.
People will be able to find out about the latest developments as part of Shrewsbury’s cycling town status at a forum next week.
Local sections of the National Cycle Network will be at the top of the agenda at Shropshire Council’s next Shropshire Cycle Forum. T
here are already more than 200 miles of National Cycle Network routes in Shropshire and Telford, and new routes are still being developed.
The forum, open to everyone in Shropshire and Telford, will take place on September 16 at 7pm at Shirehall in Shrewsbury.
Discussions will include updates on cycling projects in the Telford & Wrekin area as well as Shropshire, and opportunities to find out the latest progress on Cycle Shrewsbury.
Martin Taylor-Smith, Shropshire Council’s cabinet member for strategic planning and transport, said: “This meeting offers an ideal opportunity for people to have their say about the cycle facilities.”
Councillor Miles Kenny, chairman of the Shropshire Cycle Forum, said people would be able to find out more about the new cycle lanes and facilities being created in Shrewsbury, which were awarded specialist status by the government last year.
He said: “The meeting is open to anyone who has an interest in cycling be it as a commuter, occasional or leisure cyclist and is an opportunity to catch up on the latest in cycling in Shropshire.”
Councillor Jon Tandy, Shropshire Council’s representative for the Shropshire Cycle Forum, said he hoped cyclists took up the opportunity to make a difference and attend the meeting.
For more information and to get an agenda for the meeting visit www.shropshire.gov.uk/cycling.nsf or call Alison Kennedy, Shropshire Council’s transport planner on (01743) 253035.
The Shropshire Cycle Forum was set up in 1996 and meetings are held every three months. The main aims of the forum are for local cyclists to put forward their proposals and ideas for improvements.
