Smith looks for physical strength at Bucks

Friday 11th September 2009, 3:59PM BST.

rob-smith-24AFC Telford United manager Rob Smith today drafted in three fresh faces ahead of tomorrow’s testing Blue Square North trip to Alfreton.

Experienced striker Iyseden Christie has signed on non-contract terms, while Stuart Nicholson and Gavin Hurren have both signed on one-month loans from Tamworth.

All three will go straight into the squad for tomorrow’s game as Smith ponders ringing the changes following Tuesday’s home defeat to Northwich Victoria.

Christie, 32, was once signed for £40,000 by Leyton Orient and has also had spells with Mansfield, Rochdale and Kidderminster, before spending last season with Stevenage and Torquay.

He has been without a club so far this term.

“Iyseden was due to play in Malta this season but that fell through at the last minute,” said Smith.

“We have moved quickly to sort it and he will bring some physical strength and experience to the frontline which is what we need.” Former West Bromwich Albion youngster Nicholson had a spell on loan at Shrewsbury in 2007.

And Hurren has spent the start of this season at Tamworth having previously played for Kidderminster and Mansfield.

“A lot of clubs were keen to take Stuart on loan so we are pleased he has come to us, and Gavin is a utility player I’ve been watching for a few years and can play either centre half or centre midfield,” added Smith.

“We have got four extremely tough games coming up and I felt we needed the extra physical strength these three players will give us.”

Smith, meanwhile, is under no illusions of the size of the task facing his side tomorrow.

“Alfreton were my favourites for the title and, after a little wobble at the start, they are back to normal now,” he added.

“It will be 90 minutes of direct stuff and they are the best in our league at what they do.

“We need warriors out there and it’s going to call for blood, sweat and tears.”

Captain Stuart Whitehead is set to return.
