A man has been arrested in connection with a robbery in which a taxi driver had nearly £400 in takings stolen just moments after finishing his shift.

Carl Bates, of Water Street, Castlefields, Shrewsbury, had just parked his car in North Street in the town at about 4.40am yesterday when he was approached by a man who pushed him into railings and ran off with his money bag.

The 27-year-old, who is contracted to Central Taxis, said he immediately gave chase to the man but tripped over twisting his ankle and hurting his knee.

Richard Ewels, spokesman for West Mercia Police, said: “A man was arrested yesterday in connection with the incident.

“He has been released on police bail pending further inquiries.” Witnesses are asked to call police on 0300 333 3000.
