Landlady in refund bid after water loss

Friday 11th September 2009, 2:32PM BST.

tap_waterA landlady today launched a bid for compensation from water giant Severn Trent after hundreds of homes were left without water in a village near Bridgnorth.

Sam Wiggins, who runs the Bache Arms in Highley with husband Mark, today said she wanted to get a refund for all villagers affected by the water loss.

And she has also contacted Ludlow MP Philip Dunne to get his help.

The mother-of-five, who has been at the pub for just nine weeks, and her husband were forced to shut the pub’s restaurant on Wednesday after the water ran out after two pipes burst.

Mrs Wiggins said they had lost about £200 in trade through the closure and while the Bridgnorth Road pub was able to remain open, at one point in the evening they ran out of clean glasses.

She accused the water company of a lack of communication and said it was not the first time the village had been without water.

The 30-year-old said: “I am going to be asking Severn Trent for compensation for the entire village. We just want them to stand up and take responsibility for their actions and do something.

“I think that is the bare minimum they owe everyone.”

Sophie Jordan, Severn Trent spokeswoman, said: “Some customers may be eligible for a payment, as set out as part of Ofwat’s Guaranteed Service Standards scheme, if they went without a water supply for 12 hours.”
