Water cut off to homes as pipes burst
Thursday 10th September 2009, 10:20AM BST.
Hundreds of homes in a Shropshire village were left without water after two pipes burst.
Householders in Highley had their supplies affected when the first pipe on a bridge in Netherton Lane began leaking yesterday morning.
Repair work was delayed because of concerns about the safety of the bridge, but engineers from Severn Trent Water managed to switch supplies back on to local properties by mid-afternoon.
Shropshire Council and Highways Agency workers had to secure the bridge before the water firm’s teams were able to deal with the problem.
However, soon afterwards another pipe burst nearby and residents arriving home from work yesterday evening found reduced water pressure in their taps or no supply at all. Villagers were reduced to using bottled water for drinking whilst teams from Severn Trent worked through the night to resume supplies.
A spokeswoman for Severn Trent said most of the homes affected were reconnected by 9pm, but all of the repair work was not completed until the early hours of this morning. A spokeswoman said: “We apologise for the inconvenience whilst essential repair work was completed and we thank customers for their patience.”
