More road repairs at tragedy site

Major re-surfacing work looks set to take place on a Shropshire road where a 17-year-old student was killed in a car crash – just over a year after a previous scheme was completed.
Chippings which were laid down in Huffley Lane, near Bomere Heath, have already been cleared away by traffic, leaving slippy areas of tar meaning more work will have to take place.
Shropshire Council has today confirmed that it is working to deal with the road surface problem, which the council said was due to an issue with the “quality” of chippings which had been laid on the road.
The council has revealed the issue in discussions with the contractors to re-do the work – at no expense to the authority.
Councillor John Everall, a member of Bomere Heath Parish Council, said he was going to meet with the unitary council this week to see if the work could be re-done.
Speaking at a meeting of the parish council last night he said: “The chippings have been shifted from the road leaving areas of shiny tar which people are concerned could be very dangerous for road users.
“I think the contractors may have been a bit liberal when putting down the chippings and they have been cleared by cars passing over.
“They have now formed little mounds in places which in turn are also dangerous if a motorist hits them.”
The work was carried out in July last year following the death of Walford & North Shropshire College student, Jonathan Humphreys in January 2008.
He was killed when the Vauxhall Corsa he was a passenger in collided with a BMW. Seven other people were injured in the incident.
Phil Edwards, Shropshire Council’s highways manager for central rural, said the authority was in discussions with the contractors and work would be carried out. He said: “We are aware of a problem with the quality of the chippings used.
“Permanent remedial works are being discussed and agreed with our contractors. These works will be carried out at no further expense to Shropshire Council.”
