Letter: Why no shoes for boys?

Wednesday 9th September 2009, 11:00AM BST.

An artist's impression of the new Primark in TelfordLetter: My local branch, Telford, has recently expanded to a massive and impressive store. The problem I have may be down to the Primark Buyer as staff and supervisors in store can’t answer my query.

When the population of children is roughly 50 per cent boys 50 per cent girls, why is the ratio for shoes 0 per cent for boys to 100 per cent for girls?

I’m extremely annoyed that I wasted parking fees to come to the shop, with 1000′s and 1000′s of square feet, none of which are allocated to boys shoes.

Toddlers and men are catered for, but no boys whatsoever.

We were pointed to the white girls’ canvas shoes as they seemed to be passable as a unisex option. The girls’ shoes however enjoys rack upon rack over several units and in a couple of locations. Why is it somebody at Primark thinks boys don’t need footwear?

I had to go elsewhere for my two sons’ holiday footwear.

A supervisor told me that the Telford branch wasn’t classed as a “high up”

store and branches like Manchester, Leeds or London probably had boys footwear.

I take it from this then that Primark believes Telford is a location to some freak of mother nature where mothers only give birth to daughters? I’d really like to know why this bias exists.

You’re not alone I’m afraid to say – many other shops favour girls over boys, but their ratios could be around 75 per cent /25 per cent to the girls, which is bad enough, but zero per cent for boys is unbelievable.

As nobody at Telford’s Primark could answer me, please could somebody give me a reasonable answer.

Just be thankful that you don’t shop in Shrewsbury. Despite being the county town, most of the big chains have only “token” branches which stock just a fraction of the range found in their branches in Telford, Wrexham, etc. Primark and Debenhams don’t feature at all, Asda is a miniscule ex-Safeway. Only Morrison and Tesco had the confidence to field normal-size stores, although the latter couldn’t quite bring themselves to match the two floors in their Wrexham and Telford branches.

It’s the same old cry! Every time you go to the Telford branch of a national business and ask them for what is advertised nationally by the business, the sales person says: “We don’t do that rown de-arr!”

They make the rules up locally, I think.

Moan for moan sake i think . You can buy shoes from any where loads of shops especially on line and as for the high street they cater more for woman than men due to the fact woman doss around the shops more due to haveing not much else to do and i do thik that is a fact actually.

Andrew finch, there aren’t ‘loads of shops’ selling boys shoed at all, and finding shops selling boys and youth in particualr clothing is extremely difficult.
Yes there is internet shopping but for children this is fraught with sizing issue which make multiple purchases and returns a regular feature!
Boys are sadly overlooked in the retailers perspective – I travel to Manchester or Birmingham to shop for my son as it there are very very few shops in Shrewsbury and Telford stocking boys apparal.

Oh behave…….. we have plenty of shops who cater for boys. Many retailers on the net will do free postage etc even for returns as for having to go to birmingham etc etc i think it is just an excuse for a day out shopping.
