Councillors asked to call boundary review
Wednesday 9th September 2009, 10:05AM BST.
Councillors in Shrewsbury could call for a fresh review of a controversial boundary which sparked a major campaign amid concerns it is too big.
Shrewsbury Town Council is being asked to consider calling for a review over the Bayston Hill, Column and Sutton ward on Shropshire Council ahead of the next elections, which are to be held in 2013.
The request was made to a meeting of the town council’s finance committee on Monday night and members agreed that it should go to a meeting of the authority’s full council later this month.
Major concerns have been raised about the electoral boundary changes which came into effect when the unitary Shropshire Council was created.
The Boundary Committee for England proposed a large, single ward, to link Bayston Hill with the Sutton and Reabrook, and Column areas of Shrewsbury, which was approved and created.
But once it was proposed borough councillors, the then Shropshire County Council and residents all campaigned against it saying it was too large a ward.
The ward was created but some councillors are still unhappy both with its size and the way it was pushed through.
A statement put to the town council’s finance committee on Monday said: “To consider asking Shropshire Council to initiate a boundary review in respect of the Bayston Hill, Column and Sutton ward to be completed prior to the next unitary and town council elections in 2013.”
The proposal was put forward by Councillor Peter Nutting. He said: “It will go to the town council at the next meeting.”
Councillor Alan Mosley, who sat on the committee which met at the Guildhall, said: “People felt the three member ward was a bit of a nonsense and we had opposed it when the proposal came forward.
“There was a suggestion that it needed to be reviewed at the earliest opportunity.”
The next full meeting of Shrewsbury Town Council will be held on September 28.
