Spate of burglaries in Shrewsbury

Tuesday 8th September 2009, 11:13AM BST.

police-car-lights1A mini-crimewave has hit Shrewsbury with burglars targeting 10 homes across the town in the space of just five weeks.

Detectives today said the town had seen an “upsurge” in burglaries, with thieves stealing jewellery, cash and credit cards in the break-ins since the start of last month.

And they urged people to be vigilant and report anything suspicious.

Detective Sergeant Chris Hughes, of the Targeting Policing Unit with West Mercia Police, issued the plea as he revealed the burgled homes had been mainly in the Copthorne, Radbrook and Shelton areas.

He said: “With these recent burglaries, people’s lack of security has not been a prime issue as nearly all have been a forced entry.

“The offender has gone to the back of the premises and forced a window during the daytime while the home is empty. There is a possibility they are all linked but we are keeping an open mind.”

He reassured residents that despite the burglaries Shrewsbury remained a “safe place” with such crimes being “few and far between”. But he said there had been an “upsurge” in recent weeks and added police would continue to work to alert people to try to increase the detection rate.
