Disappointment for Town

shrewsnewlogotm1Town’s mixed start to the season continued on Saturday with a disappointing 2-1 home defeat to Bradford, writes Shrewsbury Town blogger James Pugh.

After six games Town would certainly liked to have more than eight points on the board and although our performances have warranted more, injuries have left fans frustrated with the team’s start to the season.

The main problems so far have been conceding sloppy goals and not keeping clean sheets — and this was again evident on Saturday. Overall I thought we played well enough to win, especially at the start of the match when poor finishing cost us.

One positive note this season has been the wonderful goalscoring form of Dave Hibbert, who not long ago couldn’t get in the team and didn’t seem to be wanted by Simpson. Fair play to the lad, he has got himself fit and has stepped up to the mark in replacing Grant Holt’s goals from last year.

Let’s hope his form can continue, but it would be nice to see other players get their fair share of goals too. We found out to our cost last season that we can’t just rely on one player to perform every game.

Overall this season goalscoring hasn’t been a problem for us and we have played some good attacking football. But for some reason our defence, which was so strong last year, has been easy to break down.

Injuries haven’t helped, nor has a constant change of personnel, and maybe our lack of pace at the back has been exploited by the opposition.

I have been impressed with the performances of the new players, especially Labadie and Holden. The more games they play with each other, the stronger the team will become. Let’s hope we do the opposite to last year – start slowly and finish on a high, with promotion as a reward at the end of it.

Although it’s early days, Town don’t seem to have the squad capable of challenging for promotion and I think Simpson will need to look to bring in at least two more players in on loan.

Next up for Town is a home game against local rivals Crewe followed by a tricky away trip to Lincoln. The sooner Town get all of their players fully fit and playing more consistently, the sooner we can start challenging the early pace setters.

First i would like to say well done Jake Simpson on your first full debut and only 18 years old, looks good for the future. On the start of the season ,i like the football Paul Simpsons team play they just need time to gel.We need a left back ,Shane is better in midfield or centre back.
