Comedy writer on the plinth
Monday 7th September 2009, 7:00AM BST.
A Shropshire comedy writer has publicised his new show to the world — by standing on the empty plinth in London’s Trafalgar Square.
The plinth is being used by artist Antony Gormley to create a living sculpture. Through his project, somebody will occupy the plinth every hour for 100 days, with candidates chosen by a lottery.
Les Walton, of Castlefields, Shrewsbury, was on the plinth from 6pm to 7pm on Sunday.
He used his slot to promote a Charles Darwin comedy show he is co-writing with Shrewsbury comedy group The Missing Inc.
Mr Walton, who dressed as Darwin for the occasion, took questions from the crowd and over the internet site Twitter.
He said the experience had been “brilliant” and he had enjoyed performing for the crowd.

Looking forward to this Darwin comedy. Is there a sketch involving a public artwork? Lots of scope for comedic material. You could have it misaligned, late, different colour different shape, in fact not at all as sold to the Town in the promo artwork.
They’ll be rolling in the aisles..guaranteed. Especially at the pratfalls {perfect summary word that!} when the late-night lager squad get up to their japes.
