England call-up delights Vaughan
Saturday 5th September 2009, 12:40PM BST.
Right-back Lee Vaughan today welcomed his call-up to the England ‘C’ team – and insisted some of his AFC Telford United team-mates should be joining him.
Vaughan has been named in manager Paul Fairclough’s squad for the friendly in Hungary on Tuesday, September 15.
And he should be fit to feature, having shaken off the groin injury he picked up in the 1-0 win at Gloucester on Bank Holiday Monday in time for the visit of Harrogate this afternoon.
The 23-year-old becomes the first Bucks player to be selected for the non-League under-23s international side, though striker Andy Brown was on stand-by last season.
“I’m chuffed to bits,” said Vaughan, who will meet up with the squad for the flight to Budapest a week tomorrow.
“It will be an honour, it’s something different and it’s really nice to get recognised.
“I’ve never been to Budapest before, and it will be a good experience for me and all the other lads involved.
“I’ve been told I’ll be in the 16 – hopefully I’ll start but if not it will still be worth going. There’s only one other player from our league and the rest are all Blue Square Premier.
“But that just shows what a good side we are and what a good set of players we’ve got – I’m surprised there are not one or two more of our lads going.”
Vaughan’s selection has also been warmly welcomed by Telford manager Rob Smith. “I’m absolutely made up and it’s great recognition for our club,” said Smith. “It’s been a long time coming for one of our players to be selected.
“It’s nothing short of what he deserves because he’s a quality player and he’s played 150 games for us.
“I’m really pleased that Paul Fairclough and Steve Burr have got to put up with his antics on the coach and in the hotel – I’m really looking forward to their report on that!” he joked.
