Inferno destroys hay barn
Friday 4th September 2009, 11:32AM BST.
Firefighters battled through the night to tackle a massive blaze which ripped through a barn full of hay and straw in Powys.
Dozens of firefighters from across Powys were called out at the height of the blaze at Ystyn Colwyn farm at Meifod, near Welshpool, yesterday.
Firefighters were still at the farm this morning.
The landowner alerted the Mid and West Wales Fire Service at about 4.25pm yesterday and at the height of the fire six crews were at the scene.
The fire service said there were no reports of any casualties at the time of the fire.
A spokesman for the service said a large amount of hay and straw had been completely destroyed by the fire.
“The barn is about 50 metres by 15 metres, containing hay and straw which was well alight,” he said.
He said that six fire appliances had attended the scene and firefighters were expected to be there for the best part of today.
“Most of the building has been destroyed and a fire investigation will be ongoing to establish the cause.”
