Blind man criticises ‘thoughtless’ drivers

Friday 4th September 2009, 7:55AM BST.

3667523A blind pensioner today hit out at thoughtless drivers after he stumbled into cars parked illegally on a pavement in Telford.

John Tuck was trying to avoid two cars parked on the pavement in Birchley Close, Priorslee, and so crossed the road but then walked into two more on the opposite side of the road.

The 75-year-old, of Collett Way, Priorslee, said his guide dog didn’t know how to handle pavement-parked cars as he had been trained not to walk alongside vehicles.

He said he was now finding it distressing to go out walking with his two-year-old labrador retriever, Simpson.

Mr Tuck said: “I walked my dog down to the lake, by Birchley Close, and suddenly the dog refused to walk. The reason was because cars were parked on the pavement.

“The dog is trained to walk on the pavements and  to walk around cars, but when they are blocking the pavement he stops because he doesn’t know what to do.

“The dog was just at an absolute loss so I decided to cross the road and walked straight into a car. It was right on the pavement.

Mr Tuck contacted police who issued letters to houses in the area. Spokeswoman for Telford Police, Denise Wakefield, said: Police will be issuing tickets as a next step to those causing an obstruction.”

No vehicles should be parked on the pavement, everybody knows that, it’s in the Highway Code ( you know the one that you have to read to get a driving licence), why waste time sending letters, and start doling out the tickets.

I totally agree with Barbara, cars should be parked on car parks or drives and not in the road or on pavments. This practise of parking on the pavement goes on all over Telford the authorities seem to turn a blind eye to it and it’s about time things such as tickets are issued.

    my opinion

I realise not everyone has a drive to park on, but its still illegal to park where it would cause an obstruction, especially to pedestrians. Dish out the tickets, don’t waste money on letters that will be ignored. They should be treated as though they parked where traffic wardens patrol.

you are not alone it is ABOUT TIME the authorities everywere started issuing tickets
for so-called illegal parking instead of whining
about lost revenue for goodness sake parking
is 30-50-pence in my town and they are wingeing
about the increasing losses and yet illegal parking is rampant

The police will quite happily dole out cautions but don’t give a damn when people park oposite yur driveway which makes getting on and off your drive dificult. I’m sure parking oposite of drives in a no no in the highway code!!

Passed my test about 8 years ago and I didn’t have to memorise the Highway Code then – maybe that’s the problem!
