Wind and rain batter region

Thursday 3rd September 2009, 11:05AM BST.

rain-splashTorrential rain and winds of up to 60mph battered parts of the region with the county suffering its worst weather in months.

The north of the county was the worst hit during the storms, which continued to sweep across Britain today.

Forecasters said more than an inch of rain had fallen in parts of the country during the early hours.

Shropshire Star weatherman John Warner said it had been the worst weather to hit Shropshire and Mid Wales for months.

He said: “Last night we had heavy rain and really strong winds of up to 40mph hitting Shropshire, with Shawbury perhaps getting the worst of it.

“Most of the country was hit by the storms, with the North Wales coast being affected worst of all, with winds in that area reaching more than 60mph.”

Mr Warner said tonight and tomorrow would continue to be blustery with some heavy showers.

But, he added, the forecast for next week was more promising.
