Plunge skydiver tells story on US TV

Thursday 3rd September 2009, 9:50AM BST.

Shropshire skydiver Paul Lewis, who survived a 1000ft plunge after his parachute failed, has told his story on US television news.

Mr Lewis, 40, was filming a 10,000ft tandem jump over Tilstock Airfield, near Whitchurch, on Friday, August 14, when his parachute malfunctioned at 1,000 feet. His reserve parachute also failed.

He said: “I looked up at my canopy, closed my eyes, and very, very calmly thought to myself ‘It’s all over’.”

The veteran skydiver, who has 20 years’ experience, crashed on to the roof of a farm building.

Although he suffered neck and arm injuries, he had no broken bones.

Mr Lewis told his story on CBS news in Los Angeles.

The Shrewsbury-based freelance cameraman, who is still receiving hospital treatment, said he would never skydive again as he would be “pushing his luck too far”.
