Hibbert will keep grafting

david-hibbertMan-of-the-moment Dave Hibbert has vowed not to rest on his laurels at Shrewsbury Town after a blistering start to the season.

Hibbert has struck four times in six starts so far this term, his latest goal coming courtesy of a stylish finish on his 50th League start for Town at Accrington Stanley last week.

That has represented a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the striker who struggled to hold down a first-team spot during an injury-plagued campaign last season.

Hibbert is delighted to be firing on all cylinders in the opening weeks of the campaign, but is now determined to prove he isn’t a one-month wonder.

“It’s been going well and I put that down to the fact that I’m injury free,” he said.

“I put a lot of work in during the summer to strengthening my weak areas to help avoid injury and that’s continuing now with a lot of afternoons spent down the gym.

“It’s all been down to hard work but I know it’s just the start.

“With the amount of competition we have got, I know that if I don’t perform I probably won’t be in the team the next week and that drives you on.

“I feel as though I am getting fitter and stronger all the time so I have to keep pushing on.”

Hibbert is now preparing to lead the attack against Bradford – a club where he spent a spell on loan in 2007 – at the Prostar Stadium on Saturday.

And he believes a home victory double-header against the Bantams, and Crewe, who head to Shropshire on Saturday week, would put Town amongst the early-season pacesetters.

“We were unlucky not to beat Chesterfield which would have been a big win but we put that right with three points at Accrington,” he added.

“We have got two difficult games coming up against good sides, but our home form is good and if we can get two wins we will be right up there.

“The boys are bang up for it and can’t wait for Saturday to come.”
