Everything was coming up roses across Shropshire today for a string of towns and villages which triumphed in the annual Heart of England in Bloom awards.

Newport picked up a Gold Award for the sixth year running and was judged to be one of the best towns to enter. It was joined in gold for the category by Ludlow.

Newport In Bloom chairman, Eva Allan, said: “Today is all about what the volunteers have done. A fantastic amount of hard work goes into making Newport the town it is. We hope that our efforts will bring more people into the town and help businesses.”

Oswestry took a gold award in the large town category while in the contest among villages both Claverley and Norton-in-Hales reached the same standard.

Norton, in addition to winning gold, was also judged to be the best village in the region and will now be entered into the national competition, Britain in Bloom 2010.

The Heart of England Neighbourhood award winners were as follows; Outstanding award, Edgefield Greenfingers Garden Club and Vine Close Residents, both Shrewsbury.

Merit Awards went to Flower Boxes Lead the Way, Grange Day Centre, Lilleshall House & Lodge and Severn Hospice in Bicton Heath, all Shrewsbury and Lower Broad Street Residents Association, Ludlow.
