Daniel Kawczynski MP meets his constituents
Shropshire residents who wanted to take their MP to task have had an ideal opportunity.
Shrewsbury MP Daniel Kawczynski was stuck in the stocks at a charity event in the town while his constituents hurled wet sponges at him.
But it was all in the name of charity as the Tory visited a fun day in aid of military charities Combat Stress and Help for Heroes at The Abbey pub, Monkmoor Road, on Saturday.
Now Mr Kawczynski has vowed to try and secure Shrewsbury’s Quarry for an event next year to help raise cash for the charities.
The MP for Shrewsbury and Atcham has said he was so impressed with the work of the two charities that he wants to see a combined fundraising event organised on an even bigger scale. He has been working with event organiser Jim Geraghty, a former soldier who served in Northern Ireland. Mr Kawczynski said he would be approaching Shropshire Council and Shrewsbury Town Council leaders to see if the town’s Quarry Park could be available next year for an event.
He said: “There were quite a few of these events in Shropshire over the weekend for soldiers who have suffered stress and serious injury as a result of going to war.
“I am so impressed by the things they have done across the country that I want to suggest whether we can allow them to have an event in the Quarry next year to bring together all the people behind fundraising in Shropshire.”
Mr Kawczynski said he had enjoyed the event he attended at The Abbey Pub in Monkmoor Road on Saturday and said he had taken part in a number of activities including a tug-of-war.
He said: “I am going to be speaking with Mr Geraghty to try and work with him and see if we can really get a good location like the Quarry.”
Mr Geraghty today thanked the MP for allowing himself to be put in the stocks and get a soaking for a good cause.
“He was absolutely brilliant on the day and was a real sport,” he said.
Mr Geraghty said he had used the Combat Stress centre in Newport to receive support following his experiences of war.
He said he was delighted that Mr Kawczynski was giving his backing to the charities and said he was keen to see the Quarry used for a major event.
